From the collaboration between HBO and Columbia Records was born For the Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones), an album composed of 14 tracks, signed by 14 different artists who were inspired by the events of the TV series par excellence, Game of Thrones.
The songs, in addition to commenting on the series in a very personal way, combine different musical styles, from pop to rap, from indie to folk. So we read names like Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, Lil Peep, but also James Arthur, Lennon Stella and The Lumineers. Don’t miss Florence + the Machine who signed the song Jenny of Oldstones that in the second episode of the last season is sung by Podrick.
Waiting for the last three episodes of the eighth season of Game of Thrones and our analysis of the third episode, “Battle of Winterfell“, aired last night, I recommend you to wear headphones and let yourself be carried by the music of For the Throne up to Westeros.
Here is Gus Dapperton with a hairstyle that would even envy the Nick Carter of the 90s. By the way he always looks great and now that he has released the new album Where Polly People Go to Read, as far as I’m concerned, he can do anything.
Kindness – Lost Without (feat. Seinabo Sey)
The song has all the credentials to make us fall in love: it was co-written with Kelela and features vocals from Seinabo Sey, so Lost Without sounds like a warm R&B track which features a disco-inflected bassline. In the video for the track we are aboard a train watching out the window some big gray buildings but they still seem very colorful to us.
Leven Kali – Mad At U
Who didn’t immediately want to go to the beach?
Jelani Arieh – Union Station
Jelani is nineteen years old, comes from San Diego and is part of the Raised by The Internet collective which takes its inspiration from the more famous BROCKHAMPTON. The video takes up the relaxed atmosphere of the song and represents “the start of a journey into the unknown. Leaving our place of security to chase our dreams and follow art. I hope the song inspires people to follow their hearts“.
Girl Ultra – DameLove (feat. Cuco)
It’s not Friday if Cuco isn’t here. In DameLove‘s video of the Mexican R&B singer Girl Ultra, we see him driving a big car and taking her around the desert. There’s a romantic tension in this sensuous road trip and that languid song which melts us like a Liuk in the sun is complicit.
Sidney Gish – Sin Triangle
Sidney is a young songwriter from Boston who released her album No Dogs Allowed early last year. One of its many highlights is a track called Sin Triangle that now also has a video in which Sidney wants to tell us essentially that “two faced bitches never lie” between funny animations and pages of a holy book.
BK Andersen – Sinking Canoe
Ok, the video is not great but the track deserves a listen. He will remind you a little bit of Tom Misch or Puma Blue even if he does not yet have their fame. And it’s just a matter of time.
Patience – Living Things Don’t Last
Dizzy Spells, Patience’s debut album, is out today and in the video for Living Things Don’t Last we seem to rollerskating with her even though we sit in our chair.
Mac DeMarco – All of Our Yesterdays (live at Tonight Show)
Here Comes The Cowboy, is out next week. On The Tonight Show Mac gave a typically lazy performance, bouncing around the stage to the rhythm of his nostalgic track All of Our Yesterdays.
Before midnight, LIBERATO published five new videos that make up a mini-series entitled “Capri Rendez-Vous” directed by Francesco Lettieri who tells the love story between the young Carmine and the French actress Marie.
The visuals are set in the splendid setting of Capri and along five different eras: we start from the 60s to arrive at an ending – that is not too happy – set in our days.
The images of the videos, as always, are linked to the texts and melodies of Liberato, but here they stand out from the streetwear and urban aesthetics of the Neapolitan neighborhoods to go in a direction more oriented towards auteur cinema: there are no more the boys who wander around on scooters in Mergellina or the colorful black community of “Gaiola Portafortuna”, but two black and white videos that remind us of the French cinema of François Truffaut and Jean -Luc Godard.
More generally, these visuals wanted to pay tribute to great directors (the Italians Dino Risi, Federico Fellini, Nanni Moretti are also mentioned) showing us a completely different world, inevitably more sophisticated.
The work of the whole dream team 9 Maggio is sublime (from the costumes, to the sets, to the photography) so much that the new songs takes second place to videos because, in my opinion, they’re not up to the cinematographic operation. However, it must be acknowledged that those videos would not be the same without the music of LIBERATO and his lyrics, sometimes even in sharp contrast to the visuals, but always perfect.
In any case LIBERATO and his videos make us go crazy: we can get enough of anything concerning him because he gives us a pleasant, unprecedented, and unique euphoria.
Listen to his debut album and enjoy the 30 best frames of the five new videos.
Raveena released this sweet new video just in time for Mother’s Day, paying tribute to the two women of her life (her mother and her grandmother). The clip is also about her whole family and their early immigrant story: it shows Raveena and her family in Queens where they first moved to from India in the late 1980s.
Flying Lotus – More (feat. Anderson .Paak)
There arre great expectations for Flying Lotus new album Flamagra, due out next Friday. Meanwhile here is the animated video for the new single called More featuring Anderson .Paak: the sci-fi visual directed by Shinichiro Watanabe shows .Paak as a robot DJ and FlyLo as a space man.
Venerus – Love Anthem
A short film signed by Nike marks the return of Venerus after his debut EP A che punto è la notte. The focus is on the struggle between sociopathy and romanticism. Who knows who wins.
DAVIE – Flavor
DAVIE is our favourite Flavor of the week.
Men I Trust – Norton Commander
Chill with yourself while you watch a field of wind turbines and listen to Emma’s whispered voice.
Charlie Charles – Calipso (with Dardust) ft. Sfera Ebbasta, Mahmood, Fabri Fibra
I put this video on the list just because it was shot 15 minutes from my home (but obviously I didn’t know anything about it).
FKA Twigs & A$AP Rocky – Fukk Sleep w/Sword Intro live in NY
FKA Twigs and A$AP Rocky win the prize for the best performance of the week. If you press pay you realize that you don’t need any further explanations: it looks like a science fiction movie.
slowthai – Inglorious (ft. Skepta)
slowthai’s debut album Nothing Great About Britain is out today and the new video for the cut Inglorious feat. Skepta is its manifesto. In the final frame of the visual you can read: “Inglorious, (of an action or situation) causing shame or loss of honour. an inglorious episode in British History. In some way this video is a scream of dissent against all the failures of Great Britain, to which he is forced to witness under torture as if he were under the Ludovico Technique from Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.
Music and good vibes all around the country from the south to the north, among big cities and stunning seaside towns.
