Yesterday evening, while in Italy it was 2:00 a.m., at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, on the red carpet rolled out a few days ago, the actors and actresses we loved last year started to arrive, they made us laugh and cry, both at the cinema and on television. NBC cameras are aimed, the celebrities are finishing to take their seats at the tables, the lights are dimming and the Golden Globes 2019 can begin.
The hosts of the 76th edition of the most awaited Hollywood party of the year are Sandra Oh, the famous Cristina Yang of Grey’s Anatomy, who during the evening will manage to take home the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Eve Polastri in Killing Eve, and the comedian of Saturday Night Live, Andy Samberg, who do not give up the classic opening sketches, for example claiming to be the presenters because they are the only ones who have not yet insulted anyone. The couple does the honors perfectly, even when they are forced to move Jim Carrey from the tables dedicated to the cinema to those dedicated to the TV, but the comedian was able to cash the blow as he could only do: making us laugh.
Everything is ready to present the prizes awarded by the HFPA, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and the first couple of presenters is perhaps the most anticipated: Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga go on stage to award the Golden Globe to the best actor in a tv series comedy or musical to Michael Douglas who dedicates the prize to his father, the one hundred and two year old Kirk Douglas.
The awards ceremony proceeded until the hall was invaded by doctors ready to dispense vaccines against influenza, perhaps it was better the pizza that rained from the sky at last year’s Oscars.
One cannot but mention Carol Burnett who receives the award dedicated to her, the Carol Burnett Award, which for sixty years continues to make us laugh and for this reason a prize all his own deserved it.
The evening goes on and almost all the statuettes have been assigned and we discover with pleasure that sometimes the predictions are right, so we see Christian Bale on stage to pick up the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a comedy or musical film, followed by the favorite Alfonso Cuarón, who with Rome won two awards out of three nominations.
As every year, then, it’s the turn of Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Golden Globe for career, and this time the honor of receiving the award is Jeff Bridges who for over six decades has kept us attached to the screen and his roles in films such as The Big Lebowski, True Grit, Torn, King Kong, just to mention a few, are inevitable pieces in the history of cinema.
“We’re alive, we can really make the difference. We can turn this ship in the way we want to go man!”
The sun starts to set also on the west coast and this means only one thing, it’s time to unveil the winners of the most important categories, Green Book wins as best comedy or musical film arriving at three Golden Globes, Glenn Close that in addition to winning the prize to Lady Gaga also makes one of the most beautiful speeches of the evening, directed to all women.
“We have to find personal fulfillment. We have to follow our dreams and say: I can do that and I should be allowed to do that.”
Then it’s the turn of a very emotioned Rami Malek who doesn’t fail to thank Brian May and Roger Taylor sitting in the room. But thanks to the Queen don’t end there, because Bohemian Rhapsody wins the last Golden Globe of the evening, the one for best drama film, thus winning two of the most important awards.
The 2019 Golden Globes couldn’t have ended better, with thanks to Freddie Mercury and the standing ovation of the theatre.
Read the entire list of winners and look at the gallery to discover the unforgettable moments of these Golden Globes 2019, I recommend you do so by listening to the playlist that contains all the music of the films and TV series mentioned, from All The Stars by Black Panther to Shallow by A Star Is Born.
