Helmut Lang and Saint Laurent, between art and fashion

During the Paris Fashion Week in progress in these days, Anthony Vaccarello, Creative Director of Saint Laurent, in an interview with Business of Fashion presented a new and special collaboration with the former Austrian designer and sculptor Helmut Lang that consists in the creation of a series of works of art made with production waste from the old Saint Laurent collections.

The collaboration is part of the Saint Laurent Rive Droite project, Lang’s work is based on reusing all those garments, prototypes, accessories and jewelry never finished on the market or unfinished by the French maison, to create sculptures through a process of shredding and mixing with a pigmented resin and then molded into large aluminum molds, until they become real totems.

Long fascinated by Lang and his modern and minimalist language that since the early ’90s has redefined the concept of luxury and functionality of clothing, Vaccarello initially tried to bring him back into the world of fashion proper, after the abandonment of 2005, proposing a collaboration based on denim. Lang refused but said he was ready for a joint venture that would focus on his works of art.

In presenting this new collaboration Anthony Vaccarello said: “I’ve been fascinated by Helmut for years. For my generation, he is the ultimate designer of the ’90s”, while Lang added: “Anthony was the first person in fashion to engage in a collaboration focusing on my artwork. As I collaborated with artists in different ways throughout my time in fashion, it was intriguing to be in the reversed position”.

The sculptures of Helmut Lang x Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent Rive Droite will remain on display in the Rive Droite boutique in Paris and then be moved to Los Angeles and will all be on sale.
