Suzhou Creek is the river that crosses Shanghai and, in addition to being famous for dividing the city in two, is known for the countless bridges that cross it. Some are recently built, others are considered real monuments. Right in the center of the city is the Puji Road pedestrian bridge, which connects the Zhabei and Jing’an districts. Built in 1997 and renovated for the first time in 2009 on the occasion of the Shanghai Expo, making it accessible also for bicycles and mopeds, today the bridge needs further renovation, which is why the studio 100architects presented the project called High Loop. 

High Loop involves a complete reconsideration of the spaces and their functions, organizing them by colour. We find a straight green strip that is dedicated exclusively to bicycles and motorcycles; then we see a magenta-coloured path that follows the shapes and projections of the bridge dedicated to pedestrians. This path allows passers-by to fully enjoy all the yellow areas of the bridge designed for relaxation and sharing and equipped with benches, small amphitheatres or left empty to accommodate street vendors and stalls. In addition, great space has been left for the blue areas, from which you can admire the city and its beautiful skyline. 

High Loop aims to restore the charm to a very busy but underrated area of the city, but also to bring back color and green to a metropolitan and grey area.
