Ian Trask layers vintage slides and creates surreal images

Ian Trask‘s work began with a long and unbridled search for vintage slides that culminated, but also took a turn only when he had access to the huge archives that belonged to the Trachtenburg family, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. Once he got over 5000 devices in 35 mm that knew about the past, testimony of a kind of narration past, forgotten, he managed to turn them into something new, he managed to give new life to the films.

By trying and trying again, by layering slides on slides, Ian has managed to create new stories that have never been told, never existed.

What Ian did was a sort of archaic, analogue film montage, overlapping different scenes, each with its own meaning and creating a third scene, with a whole new meaning. Sometimes his images are simply funny, playful, other times they have a political message.
