The first IKEA chair designed by an Italian

IKEA has a new chair in its store, and it’s designed by an Italian. Gio Tirotto is indeed the first Italian designer to be commissioned by the Swedish giant for the design of one of its products. «Designing a chair for IKEA is certainly one of the most interesting and important challenges for a designer,» said Tirotto, emphasizing that the underlying principle of an IKEA piece should be «accessible to the highest number of people,» without forgetting about assembly, one of the brand’s most social aspects. The chair is named Ensholm and is assembled using only ten Allen screws. Let’s learn more about this chair and why it has captivated IKEA.

The name chosen by Tirotto for the chair is inspired by a Swedish island, as a tribute to IKEA. The designer’s sustainable project is designed for outdoor use, although it can easily adapt to indoor settings. The chair comes in a single green color, blending seamlessly with a green environment. In technical terms, Ensholm can be stacked and is made of painted steel, while the seat and back frame are completely covered with a plastic mesh fabric, secured with a zipper. The rear legs of the chair extend slightly beyond the backrest, creating a convenient handle that facilitates moving the chair without directly touching the fabric.
