Khalid said in a statement to Billboard:

“More than anything in life right now I want growth. I want my music to grow and represent how I am growing up. Suncity is the start of a new era for me, this music poured out of me and I didn’t want to wait to share it. I wanted to be able to live in this moment with my fans and my friends and speak from the heart”.

On Friday, the young and talented Khalid released Suncity EP.

And no, we are not convinced it is the beginning of a new era or that the young singer-songwriter from El Paso is musically grown up.
But, let’s go step by step.

Khalid was eighteen when he debuted in July 2016 with the single Location: it peaked at number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and was later certified double platinum.

The song reached 35 million streaming on Spotify, brightly opening the way to the debut album American Teen: 15 tracks in which Khalid feels free to express his full identity as a teenager (drama attached) but with a surprising compositional maturity for a guy his age. That warm voice, those sad, alluring melodies, shone a light on his unquestioned talent.

In 2017 he contributed uncredited vocals to Kendrick Lamar‘s song The Heart Part 4 and also worked with SZA and Post Malone in Lorde’s Homemade Dynamite remix.

Collaborations became more and more: Khalid worked with Ty Dolla $ign and 6LACK, H.E.R., Sabrina Claudio, Imagine Dragons, Normani.

He was able to present himself as one of the right ones, one of those to bet on in 2017 to win easily in 2018.

But no.

In the middle of the new year Khalid drops a new Ep, Suncity, saying that it is the start of a new era, but for those of us who bet on him, this EP has the sound of a disregarded promise.

Khalid is now 20 years old but his lyrics remain immature: love is still the main topic and sounds complicated and tormented, and there’s a “she” who is always as beautiful as a diamond. And that’s the point.
In these seven tracks, we are never faced with lyrics that give us the opportunity for a deeper reflection. Suncity EP could is an eternal American Teen or, rather, an eternal adolescence. We can conclude by saying that this is the collateral and unwanted effect from which Khalid is overwhelmed without being conscious of it.

But on the other hand, it would be dishonest to say that we don’t like it: in each of these tracks, Khalid is still that young American on whom we have a bet. With its warm atmospheres, the sinuous voice, the clean melodies, a great stylistic versatility (in the title track feat. Empress Of and Rosalìa, he also plays the reggaeton trump card).
But it’s not enough. It is not enough to turn to pop or reggaeton: Khalid already has all the skills of a pop star. He just lacks the courage to risk.
After all, only those who risk, grow up.
