The Self-Supporting Furniture of Kryss

This year, designer Svea Tisell founded Kryss, a project aimed at exploring the potential of a single material through experimental three-dimensional forms. With the Entwined Objects project, Kryss employs the multiweave technique to transform a simple rope into self-supporting furniture, emphasizing adaptability, efficiency, and functionality.

Developed as an open-source technique by Estonian textile artist Kadi Pajupuu, multiweave has been primarily used in artistic contexts. Kryss, however, expands its application to furniture design with a tool featuring 345 conduits that guide the rope into the desired position. Once the weaving process is complete, the conduits are removed, leaving behind a rigid, self-supporting structure.

Multiweave is a three-dimensional weaving method that allows rope to form rigid structures without additional supports. Inspired by the tension of knots, Kryss’s pieces adapt to weight and movement. The process begins with a single rope, often sourced from climbing materials or production surplus, creating a fully recyclable monomaterial construction. At the end of its lifecycle, the final knot can simply be untied to reuse the material.

With Entwined Objects, Kryss redefines the role of textiles in design, shifting them from decorative elements to structural components. The lounge chair molds itself to the user’s shape, while the shelving system adjusts to the weight of the objects it holds. This approach highlights textiles as a load-bearing material, moving beyond the traditional concept of soft furnishings. Through multiweave, Kryss successfully integrates sustainability and innovation, crafting a monomaterial, adaptable, and recyclable design that opens new possibilities for the future of furniture.
