Kusheda Mensah Designed a Pouf That Brings People Closer

A new collaboration between British-Ghanaian designer Kusheda Mensah and Swedish brand Hem gives life to Palma, a collection of sculptural poufs that blurs the boundaries between furniture and art, design and human connection.

Unveiled at the 3daysofdesign festival in Copenhagen, Palma is composed of three soft, organic shapes designed not just for sitting but for closeness. Inspired by bodies and natural structures, the lines reflect Mensah’s vision: to create objects that facilitate connection, invite interaction, and become true social catalysts.

Each piece in the series is designed to accommodate multiple people, promoting inward-facing postures and shared moments of intimacy. The poufs can stand alone or be arranged into larger configurations, creating small islands of encounter. Available in various coverings — from Kvadrat fabric to bouclé to leather — they are now on sale at Hem.com, with prices starting from €799.

This is the first collaboration between Hem and Mensah, and with Palma, she ideally continues the path started with Mutual I, her previous series of “functional sculptures.” The designer’s approach — rigorous in research but always playful in outcome — instantly won over the Hem team. “It was love at first sight,” says founder Petrus Palmér.

With Palma, furniture is no longer just a matter of aesthetics or function. It becomes a gesture, an invitation, a true embrace.
