Today with Marta Monge aka @lesuperflu.o we tackle a dilemma that has caused artificial intelligence to hallucinate: is it a muffin or chihuahua?
Marta is a designer and art director from Turin, a guest these days at the visual arts festival Soluzioni Festival (March 23-25, 2023). Intrigued by the union of different expressive mediums, she experiments in the last period with the use of AI noticing that zooming in on the protruding eyes of a chihuahua the artificial intelligence recognizes it as the blueberry of a muffin. The artist jokes about this amusing fact, making six vignettes that tell the story of a dog’s metamorphosis into a muffin. Ceci n’est pas un muffin is the title of the work, which emulates Magritte’s surrealist title Ceci n’est pas une pipe by addressing the concept of the perception of reality, emphasizing how very often reality is not what it seems, even for an artificial intelligence. In this way, two seemingly distant worlds become part of the same reality.

The illustrations by Marta Monge are irreverent, colorful and real. The artist pays attention to the world around her, to social issues and phenomena, which inspire her and tickle her imagination. With ironic illustration, Marta communicates a story that may be more or less close to the viewer, sparking debates and conversations. Examples include scenes from everyday life, such as the act of brushing teeth as a couple or relaxing naked on the bed after a shower. More often than not, the artist herself is the protagonist of her illustrations: she portrays herself in uncomfortable everyday situations – such as traveling in a crowded subway – or in moments that made her reflect – such as when she took refuge in her plant-filled room during quarantine in the city.
