Misha Japanwala is a New York designer who has created a work of great visual force: Azaadi. The project was developed after the artist’s trip to Pakistan, which came into contact with women victims of domestic violence and, consequently, decided to become spokesmen of their painful experiences, combining fashion and art in homage to these brave women.

Back in New York she immediately started working to create her project: hybrid garments made of cloth and plaster sculptures that highlight some parts of the female body and their violated beauty. Misha has created plaster molds based on her naked body and that of women who have suffered violence, these solidified forms become shields and armor to protect the injured body parts.

“I wanted to use casts of my own body as vessels to highlight the strength of the women who weren’t afraid to fight to live on their own terms and also, the fragility that comes with being an outspoken woman in Pakistan.”

Azaadi, which means ‘freedom’ in Urdu, is a scream to get rid of the pain and express the experience of many women, both in Pakistan and in every part of the world.
