We are in Watts, Los Angeles, in one of the largest housing developments west of the Mississippi River: Nickerson Gardens. During the pandemic Flea – a.k.a. Peter Balzary, bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers – volunteered in the area helping with food and mask distribution. The musician himself, because his strong tie to the Nickerson Gardens community, strongly wanted the renovation of the playground associated with this area. Finally, on August 16, the space reopened its doors to the public, and today we are here to show you the result.

The goal of this renovation is to make this place easy to clean and durable in part due to the sustainable attitude of the organizations involved. A place to spend carefree moments throughout the year. But not only that, according to Donny Joubert, the chairman of the Watts Gang Task Force, «it is crucial to be able to give importance to the children belonging to this community, showing that we do not want to leave them behind.» It’s a fascinating project that puts the residents of Nickerson Gardens first and promises a truly sustainable and lasting future for the 1,640-square-foot playground. All designed specifically for the Southern California climate and the children but also the adults belonging to the community.
