Nike and Air Afrique, the Paris-based creative collective inspired by the namesake pan-African airline, unite heritage and future with the Air Max RK61: a “dress shoe” that brings Air to a new canvas, weaving cultural memory, contemporary design, and sport-inflected elegance.

The name is a manifesto: RK as Air Afrique’s flight code, 61 as the founding year. The silhouette references the classic Air Max SNDR and timeless moccasins: a clean, refined upper paired with the comfort of Nike’s Air Max technology.

The details speak aviation: an Air unit inspired by a turbine, “Air Afrique” in Morse code on the outsole, a zipper pull with the historic logo, and a jacquard sockliner that recalls vintage aircraft seats. Icon and innovation in balance, between technical precision and an artisanal touch.

“Air is cultural and human elevation,” sums up Ahmadou-Bamba Thiam of the collective. Founded in 2021 with Lamine Diaoune, Djiby Kebe, and Jeremy Konko, Air Afrique revives the airline’s legacy as a multidisciplinary platform that connects communities through visual arts, cinema, and photography.

“We wanted to honor an era of movement that shaped many people’s outlook,” adds lead designer Jupiter Desphy: a shoe that speaks of travel, belonging, and emotion.

The RK61 continues the first partnership between Nike and Air Afrique (following the Air Afrique Football Club) and debuts in the Première Classe campaign: a boarding call for the new generation of athletes, reinterpreting early-20th-century advertising through the lens of comfort and elegance. Featured are intergenerational icons of the diaspora: Didier Drogba, Oumou Sangaré, Marie Josée Ta Lou-Smith, and Mme Daba Traoré, a former employee of the airline.

The Nike x Air Afrique Air Max RK61 will be available globally from October 9 on SNKRS and at select retailers.
