Nike and Patta are teaming up again for the launch of a new Air Max 1, release scheduled for October 8, and with a new short film series titled The Wave, which debuted yesterday, October 4 on Nike’s YouTube channel.
The Nike X Patta Air Max 1 is inspired by the authentic connection that exists between the style and cultural influence of Patta and the Air Max community. This latest collaboration takes the original Air Max 1 silhouette to which it adds a twist through a new wave pattern and a mini Swoosh, while the Patta logo appears on the tongue.
The film The Wave and the wave pattern on the sneaker, are both references to the cultural changes and influence Patta has had on both their community and the industry as a whole.
Patta is a black-owned Dutch company based in Amsterdam that has been in business for over 17 years, and has had a huge impact not only for its distinctive aesthetic but also for knowing how to seize opportunities to create dedicated spaces for younger people through th Patta Running Team.
The Patta Foundation on the other hand, was founded more recently to help and support the cultural education of young and aspiring entrepreneurs.
And it is thanks to this new approach of a now historic partnership, that between Nike and Patta, that everything has evolved into this new chapter of a still long story.
“We’re excited to launch the Air Max 1 and The Wave as the starting point for a more purpose-driven evolution of our partnership with Nike. Product will always remain a common thread in what we deliver, and together, we’re committed to developing nuanced projects and narratives that aim to truly serve and drive change for our communities”, said Gee Schmidt, co-founder of Patta.
To celebrate the release, Nike and Patta have produced four short films directed by Mahaneela, an emerging filmmaker who trained under Steve McQueen, and produced by McQueen’s own production company, Lammas Park. Four chapters exploring themes of freedom, creativity and truth within the Patta community as they flow back through cultural landscapes of style, music, fashion and sports.
“Since I started making films and taking photographs, my work has always been about finding ways to show love to people who look like me. Patta is a great example of how creativity can manifest through authentic relationships and then return to the people and places we come from. For many young black filmmakers, Steve McQueen and his legacy have been a sort of North Star. To be able to collaborate with him on this project, which for me is a love letter to my fellow black creatives, was unforgettable”, Mahaneela stated.
“I’m proud to work with Nike and Patta, a black-owned company that has always supported very interesting black talent, in bringing emerging new voices like Mahaneela’s to a wider audience”, Steve McQueen said.
Patta’s seventh collaboration with Nike, and the Dutch brand’s fifth interpretation of the Air Max 1, will be released through the SNKRS app, online at Patta’s website and in Patta stores starting October 8. From the 15th instead, it will be available at select retailers.
