With Phoenix, photographer Serena Clausi signs one of her most intense and impactful projects—a visual narrative that speaks of transformation, fragility, and rebirth. The series was born from the desire to give shape to an inner journey, the one that follows destruction, when everything seems lost but something, in the silence, slowly begins to piece itself back together.

Created during a competition featuring drag queens, Phoenix is a photo essay that captures the essence of metamorphosis, freedom of expression, and the courage to show oneself for who one is. In the images, light takes center stage: it cuts through space, grazes bodies, and gives life back to the fragments. Each photograph is a rebirth of its own, a small rite of passage in which vulnerability turns into strength. Serena builds a language made of contrasts, of colors that seem to breathe, and of suspended gestures, capable of evoking the exact moment when pain becomes beauty.

Originally from Cosenza, Calabria, Serena has found in photography a way to “tell emotions and give voice to what often remains invisible,” as she states. Her gaze is intimate yet, above all, able to blend reality and suggestion with a natural ease that runs through all her work.

Phoenix is therefore an invitation to recognize the power of change and to let oneself be crossed by the fire without fearing it. Like the mythological creature from which it takes its name, the project tells us that being reborn does not mean returning to what we were, but accepting to become something new, shaped by light and by ashes.
