Paolo Barretta is a young Italian photographer who has participated in the famous Sky’s talent “Master Of Photography” 2018 edition. The impeccable composition that prefers a central subject, the minimalistic shots and the meditative mood are the main elements that distinguish his style, intimate and elegant.

Us at Collater.al have asked Paolo a few questions about his and his work:

How did your adventure with photography start?

It started a long time ago. I have always been instinctively attracted by arts and by the possibility of being able to express themselves through them. First of all, I find myself in music: I play the piano since I remember it and it has always been a huge artistic, emotional and visionary relief valve for me. I could hide in places close to me, having the tangible opportunity to create images in my head. The photography came after a few years when I realized I needed to visually create those same images that were created in my mind through music.

What are the shots that have marked your career so far? Why did you select these?

At the age of sixteen, when I was living the maximum moment of my photographic experimentation through the film (I was born with the film) I developed a lot of shots, and above all self-portraits, to be able to identify myself completely. At that time I created my first real work, even if I was unconscious again. That shot that sees me between the beach and the sea curled up against myself against the wind was then later chosen as the cover for a novel by Romana Petri, for Longanesi publisher.

I realized that the way I felt was like gasoline for me and that I would never want to get away from it. I continued my studies in photography, and after a long period of artistic perdition, I found myself, creating exclusively what I really wanted to do, detaching myself from the canons of aesthetic perfection and beauty. Another very representative image of my work is a shot of two arms that approach each other. It has been published, shared, reviewed on different magazines. Subsequently, thanks to my participation in Master of Photography 3 for Sky Art, I was able to realize other images that made me know even better all over Europe.

In which direction do you think your artistic research is going?

Well, it’s very difficult to say. In what direction am I going? Who am I really? What do I want from my life? Unfortunately, these are questions that each of us has difficulty in finding a concrete and lasting answer. The truth is that you can never get a global view of what concerns us, because things change, change, they go on unexpected directions, and you, well, you with them. Now I think my research is to be true to myself. I want to keep talking about my emotional states. How often I feel isolated in the world, how loneliness is not something to be denied, and how winter represents me as an emotional state. But also hope and love, the hope of not being alone after all. I’m also trying to get closer to the commercial world, understood as portraiture, but always in my style.

Which artists inspire you?

I’ve never had real artists of reference on photography, or rather, perhaps only one that has always inspired me a lot. Gregory Crewdson was a great lighthouse for me, but when I was a child, especially Edward Hopper. Let’s say that even if at times I have deviated from these two inspirations, they have always been very important for me. I am inspired by many things, a memory, music, a movie. For example, The Neon Demon by Nicolas Winding Refn was essential for me, in a moment of total darkness.

What are your plans for the future?

Being able to create stability in the first place. Being able to be satisfied by myself, satisfied and in peace with what surrounds me. As for photography, I hope to be able to get the representation of an agency and to be able to live exclusively of my art.
