Rough Simmons FW21, between archival fashion and anime

Andrea Tuzio

Rough Simmons is the perfect example of what hovers between the celebration of archival fashion and the parody of fashion itself.

The brand, founded in 2018 by Brian Bollin, was born thanks to the forums and sites dedicated to the archival garments of the Belgian designer Raf Simmons – the name in fact is based on the wrong translation that was made on the Japanese auction sites dedicated to the designer – and has achieved success thanks to the internet culture from which it draws inspiration.

Playing with this dichotomy, Rough Simmons launched the FW21 collection, which continues to be a sort of crossover between homage and parody to Simmons’ archival garments, obviously keeping their recognizable styles and re-imagining them contaminated by anime and manga references that represent some of the most important cornerstones of Japanese culture.

It is no coincidence that the anime and manga chosen by Bollin are those that more than others have had a strong impact on Japanese society and culture, such as Akira of 1988, a cult animation movie written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, the author’s absolute masterpiece and perfect synthesis of the concept of cyberpunk thanks to which Japanese animation became very popular in the West; Neon Genesis Evangelion, a 1995 anime series produced by Gainax studio, scripted and directed by Hideaki Anno. This wonderful work is considered one of the most influential anime of all time thanks to the numerous religious, cabbalistic, Jewish and biblical references as well as a deep psychological introspection of the characters; Berserk, manga and anime written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura who explores the most hidden, deep and dark corners of human nature through themes such as the illusion of free will, the dark power of violence, the fate of man and the omnipresence of evil; JoJo’s bizarre adventures, a manga written and drawn by Hirohiko Araki in 1987 and still in progress, tells the vicissitudes of the Joestar family and in each of the eight series dwells on the adventures, each takes place in a different historical period, of one of his descendants and throughout the work there is an enormous amount of musical and cinematographic quotations, initially veiled and hidden, and then increasingly evident.

Many of the protagonists of the anime/manga just mentioned are part of the graphics with which the items of the collection are decorated, such as Kaneda and Akira‘s Tetsuo on the bomber Neo-Tokyo (the city where the story takes place) and Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion

All pieces in Rough Simmons’ FW21 collection are entirely handmade and hand-printed in the United States using the highest quality materials and are available now on the brand’s website.
