The famous Japanese design studio Nendo, which we recently talked about here, has completed one of its biggest projects ever: Siam Discovery. This is the total renovation of the exterior and interior of a department store in Bangkok, Thailand.

For the occasion, the studio was asked to create a completely original vision for the new complex, where 13 unique themed spaces aim to provide a revolutionary life experience: the unconventional open space Exploratorium is focused on the concept of laboratory, as revealed by Nendo:

“Rather than classifying products by brand, the experience is organized around the theme of the Lifestyle Laboratory. Each sales floor includes laboratory equipment such as glasses, flasks and tubes and diagrams of molecular structures, DNA sequences, microscopes, amoebas, smoke and bubbles”.

The goal is to encourage visitors to discover and enjoy a mix of tastes and lifestyles, which is why the idea of the laboratory is articulated in different variants such as digital lab, street, creative and playful.

The store’s 13 themed spaces are spread over 40,000 square metres and five floors. Although each of these is visually distinct from the other, one point of similarity is that the finishes of the floors, ceilings and shop windows seem to merge with each other.

“In this way, we wanted to create an atmosphere in which people can feel relaxed and free to get closer to the shops”.
