The photographer Maria Svarbova is fascinated by the sterile and geometric aesthetics of the old communal swimming pools, especially those built during the socialist era in her hometown of Slovakia.
Every scene she immortalizes is highly controlled, from the subjects, to the bright colors to the shadows that make up each shot.
All the figures are mid-movement, so motionless that they look almost frozen, resembling smooth and cold tiles in the background.
Despite the retro setting, the images somehow evoke a futuristic feeling, as if the swimmers had come from a stranger future.
In the Swimming Pool series began in 2014 and, at the moment, it is the largest series she worked on.
