In 1964, the Republic of Zambia decided to take part in the worldwide space race, organizing the first African space shuttle. The dream was to bring the first African astronaut to the moon.

The shamelessly failed shipment becomes precious material for the Spanish photojournalist Cristina De Middle, who rewrites the story of this extraordinary surreal historical event in her photographic project The Afronauts, halfway between reality and fiction.

With eccentric reconstructions and fake archival materials, the story of an impossible dream is documented. In this surreal and utopian tale, the artist wants to emphasize that Africa, while not having the same level of technological progress, shares the same identical dreams with the rest of the world.
