Since fall 2020, each year the independent art fair ReA! has offered a selection of 100 talented and international emerging artists. During last year’s third edition, held in October in the beautiful spaces of Milan’s Fabbrica del Vapore, a jury of experts selected ten artists for the ReA! Art Prize 2022. The winners are now featured in the group exhibition “Troubled Waters,” open until May 28 at Lampo (inside the redeveloped Scalo Farini complex).

The exhibition, curated by the curatorial team of ReA! (Maria Myasnikova, Rita Meschiari, Erica Massaccesi, Paola Shiamtani, Milena Zanetti and Vittoria Martinotti), places in dialogue the works of young artists Dario Filippis, Gabriel Cautain, Lea Colombier, Michele Bazzoli, Omar Gabr, Qikai Guo, Simla Iceli, Stefano Ferrari, Tarzan Kingofthejungle and Yingming Chen. All with diverse backgrounds and heterogeneous artistic practices.

The theme chosen by the curators celebrates error as possibility, drawing on Donna Haraway‘s story in which the misadventures of ten characters intertwine. The title itself-literally “troubled waters”-refers to difficult situations in which it is easy to be afraid, agitated and desperate for a way out, but where instead we should learn to relax, accept and welcome them. To wallow then in murky waters, without trying to clear them. Similarly, within the exhibition space, the works of the ten artists coexist with each other, without pretending to amalgamate but rather maintaining a certain autonomy.
Thus imagining a timeless place, a decaying Earth, empty and deserted, the curators set up a gloomy environment, lit only by natural light and Tarzan Kingofthejungle lanterns, which contribute in creating a magical atmosphere.
The works, the only survivors in this dreamlike dimension, populate the room like mystical creatures or relics from the past, from a forgotten era. Jeans float in the air (Tension, Gabriel Cautain), ceramic dogs are crystallized in time (What happens to the things I finish?, Dario Filippis), a huge insect emerges in the center of the room (Evolutionary Inspiration Monument, Stefano Ferrari). These are the works of young artists who acquire an ambiguous identity in this space.
The fine selection only makes us curious about the artists that the ReA! team will present during this year’s fourth edition, to be held Oct. 12-15, also at the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan.
