Yuko Nishikawa‘s environments recreate fantastic, colorful spaces that seem to come to life. Currently residing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, she works in a studio that was built with the help of her friends and is filled with recycled materials. Her creative journey began in Japan, where she was born and raised, and later moved to New York, where she graduated with a degree in Interior Design from FIT in 2002.
Her work focuses on architecture, restoration, interior and product design. However, Nishikawa is also involved in a wide range of techniques, such as creating Murano glass or mirrors, and designing metal, wood, and frame accessories, among others. When it comes to ceramics, there are two notable collaborations in the designer’s artistic career: one with Calvin Klein Home and another with Anthropologie. These were accomplished while working for Donghia, a design brand that she left in 2017 in favor of working more immersive installations, both time-specific and tailored to specific spaces.
One of her most unique projects was undertaken during the first lockdown when she committed to painting one artwork per day for 100 days. She has also collaborated with the brand Sandro to create paintings for over 52 stores worldwide. Nishikawa continues to exhibit her works in galleries around the world, and her mobile sculptures bring life to the spaces chosen by the designer.
