Aedo, the sofa you listen to with your hands

Among the grand installations and big-name brand projects, during our endless rounds at Milan Design Week, we stumbled upon something that truly stole our hearts. Inside MoscaPartners Variations, which transformed the rooms of Palazzo Litta into a pure design showcase, we found ourselves walking into a room furnished with just one yellow sofa. If we had stopped at first impressions, we would’ve probably just walked past it. But instead, we moved closer—and noticed some raised dots: a sentence embroidered in Braille.
It’s Aedo, the sofa by Adrenalina – an Italian company founded in 1999 – born from “Adrenalina incontra Museo Omero e Istituto Cavazza”, a curatorial project that, for the second consecutive year, brings the Romagna-based brand into dialogue with unconventional worlds, on a journey through (and beyond) the realm of sensory experience.

The uniqueness of Aedo lies in the fact that it wasn’t designed “for” blind people, but “with” them: the outcome of real workshops and meaningful conversations, hosted by Adrenalina in collaboration with the Museo Tattile Omero in Ancona and the Istituto dei Ciechi Francesco Cavazza in Bologna. Here, blind and visually impaired participants touched, listened to, and smelled design—and reinvented it from the inside. Sight? For this project, it was deliberately left aside. In its place, touch, smell, temperature, and sound became the new aesthetic coordinates.

Every element of Aedo—from the curve of the seat to the fold of the armrest, from the softness of the cushions to the placement of the storage pockets—is designed to be intuitively inhabited, even by those who cannot see it. The satin upholstery holds embroidered Braille phrases—those very phrases that caught our attention. They are the desires, visions, and tactile dreams of the people who participated in the co-design process. Like a musical score, every surface tells a different story, a memory, a sensation.

«My hands are my eyes.
Through the sofa, I would like to touch
what I can only imagine:
for example, the clouds».

Aedo is certainly a sofa, but also a place, a refuge, a tool, a connection. It features integrated charging points, storage compartments, and differentiated surfaces that stimulate discovery. But most importantly, it transforms the act of sitting into a narrative experience. It’s no coincidence that its name recalls the aedi, the blind storytellers of antiquity—voices able to transcend centuries, spaces, and sensory limits.

In a Milan Design Week that is increasingly social-friendly and seems obsessed with being instantly shareable, Adrenalina has presented a kind of design that is not just to be looked at: it must be felt, understood with the body. A radically human design, unafraid to set aside conventional aesthetics to rediscover the deepest function of dwelling: feeling at home, anywhere.
