The London Portraits of Alberto Tandoi

400 KM is a project by photographer Alberto Tandoi that later became a book. A 400-kilometer walk across London that turns into a story of encounters and chance convergences — an archive of moments shared with strangers, destined to remain forever impressed on film.

Far from the idea of an urban reportage, 400 KM is more of a personal diary — a way to draw the outlines of an ideal city. Tandoi walks through London with a curious and open gaze, letting himself be guided by the rhythm of the street, the shifting lights, and the faces that cross his path. What emerges is an emotional rather than geographical map: a singular vision of what London is — or perhaps of what the author wishes it were.

Through hundreds of portraits, 400 KM becomes a celebration of diversity and individual expression. Tandoi digs into the city’s visual fabric to illuminate the hidden color within monotony, to reveal the greatness of uniqueness amid the everyday grey. Every photographed face tells a silent story — that of a fleeting encounter turned into testimony.

The result is a sort of “census,” a mosaic of personalities that conveys the collective soul of a metropolis in constant motion. In the end, 400 KM is one great portrait: that of London seen through the eyes of someone who walks it, step by step, until it becomes their own.
