Black and white figures run on walls of palaces and urban architecture, dragging long shadows. A perspective game that disorients our bored gaze, accustomed to wandering between empty and predictable inputs. The author of this poetic illusion is Anders Gjennestad aka Strøk, a Norwegian stencil artist.
His photorealistic images with depth and complex details, move on the walls, live lives parallel to ours, ignoring us from their perpendicular world. They interact with their space, shared with us from an alternative perspective, and one cannot help wondering what the world is like from their point of view.
His works remind me that as a child, lying on the sofa with my head hanging, I fixed the roof of the room, the doors, the paintings, the chandelier, the small bubbles of moisture, trying to walk with fantasy in a reality made of reversed physical laws and words said backwards.
The blood on my head disorientated me just before I learned my name upside down and climbed over the door to go out and fall into a vanilla abyss…
When it doesn’t populate our cities with inhabitants of an orthogonal dimension, it works on recycled materials, printing its figures on rusty metal, wooden palettes, pieces of cracked wall or polished glass…
Our reality is just a joke regulated by paradoxical and indeterminable physical laws. “Laccadere”, as Heisenberg used to say, “is rather a game of chance.”
