On the occasion of the exhibition Look Now, See Forever, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama created a surprising installation for the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art.
For The Obliteration Room, as the installation was titled, Yayoi Kusama constructed a large-scale domestic environment, painting every wall, chair, table, piano and decorative object brilliant white, like one enormous blank canvas.
Over the following two weeks, the museum’s youngest visitors were given thousands upon thousands of colourful dot stickers and invited to participate in the transformation of the space, turning it into a vibrant explosion of colour. The white room was gradually obliterated, while the measurable space changed with the passing of time.
A work of disarming simplicity, built from the most elementary of elements.
