In the work of an artist like Daniel Arsham, detail is central. His small-scale works on paper, created with charcoal and graphite, require an almost surgical level of concentration, absolute control of line and light. It is precisely around these needs that Fernando Liébana Ferreiro, as designer of CALIPER, designed and produced a bespoke drafting table, conceived first and foremost as an operational tool rather than simply a design object.

Commissioned to support the production of Daniel Arsham’s drawings, the table integrates a backlit surface and a magnifying lamp—essential elements in supporting the meticulous process that defines these works. Light becomes an active part of the practice, enhancing precision and making every subtle variation of the mark visible.

The project goes beyond the work surface itself. Fernando Liébana Ferreiro and CALIPER developed customized storage solutions for paper, charcoal, and tools, building an organized system that minimizes interference between intuition and execution. Charging ports and light controls are mounted directly onto the surface, discreetly yet functionally integrated, striking a balance between technology and craftsmanship.

Crafted from CNC-machined aluminum with a clear anodized and bead-blasted finish, the table expresses an industrial precision that dialogues with the artisanal dimension of drawing. The material choice results in an essential aesthetic capable of supporting the creative gesture without overpowering it.

Entirely assembled in CALIPER’s studio in Madrid and later shipped to Daniel Arsham in New York, the project belongs to that hybrid space where design becomes infrastructure for artistic practice. Not a simple piece of furniture, but a device built around the rhythm and needs of a contemporary artist.
