Charlie Davis’ illustrations

-
Giulia Guido

Charlie Davis is a London illustrator with a well-defined and recognizable style, his work is a perfect balance of shapes and colors, the result of various tests and experiments.

The starting point of each of his illustrations is the inspiration, which Charlie Davis seeks in the world around him, in the city, in people, in films and books, but also in the work of other colleagues, in everything can hide the right idea.

Once the light bulb is turned on, he starts drawing on paper, calibrating the shapes and creating a perfect balance between sinuous and gentle lines and other straight and marked lines. Once the sketch is finished, the London illustrator finishes the work digitally, a phase during which he adds another fundamental element of his work, color. He himself has stated that he never uses more than two or three different colors, this choice allows him to play with shades, lights, and shadows without weighing the image down. Moreover, you can see that to emphasize the subject and the message, the colors are not always realistic

Infinite, great importance is given to the texture of the color, a stylistic choice that immediately recalls the illustrations of the 70s and vintage advertising.

Over the years, Charlie’s illustrations have captured the attention of several clients in both advertising and publishing, working with clients such as Adobe, Cadbury, Playboy, Smirnoff and Mr Porter.
