City, the photo book by John MacLean
City is the name of the photographic book and the project of the English artist John MacLean that collects a series of images of an ideal urban context.
Metropolitan centres have always had an infinite fascination for photographers, who appear as a sort of huge playground to sharpen the eyesight. The City project by British photographer John MacLean focuses on the urban context and turns it into something new and extremely personal.
All the images were taken around the world, so not in a single city. The interesting aspect of his work is in fact precisely that of having created a new visual urban code, an ideal city with its own imaginary.
Despite the multiplicity of places, all the photographs share a certain visual and narrative coherence at almost abstract moments, within which graphic lines and openings are repeated, windows used as secondary frames inside the camera and light used not to illuminate the subjects, but to create silhouettes.
“The camera allows my inner world to overlap the outer one.”
In the City, MacLean designed his own city. Visit the artist’s website to learn more and take a look at our gallery.
