In the world of contemporary design, it often happens that the most unexpected objects become the starting point for new experiments. With Silico Lamp, Daniel Klein transforms a material normally associated with plastic surgery into an element capable of producing a surprisingly soft and organic light.

The project’s distinctive feature lies precisely in its diffuser: each lamp uses a recycled silicone breast implant. As often happens with this type of procedure, implants are generally replaced every ten years, even when they are still in perfect condition. Some of these devices, after being carefully sterilized, are then recovered and transformed into lighting components.

The silicone used for implants is designed to be extremely strong and durable. It is a material made to withstand years of use without degrading, to the point that it can be squeezed or compressed without being damaged. It is precisely this combination of elasticity, milky translucency, and toughness that makes it surprisingly effective as a light diffuser.

For Daniel Klein, however, the relationship with these objects is not only technical but also personal. As the son of a plastic surgeon, he grew up surrounded by them, gradually developing a curious fascination with their form and their almost sculptural quality. The idea came almost by chance: during a creative experiment, the designer placed a light source behind an implant and was struck by the way the material spread the light evenly and softly, creating a warm and enveloping glow.

From that moment, a research process began that would lead to the creation of Silico Lamp, available both as a table lamp and a floor lamp. The result is an object that plays on the boundary between industrial design, ready-made, and conceptual provocation, transforming a medical material into a domestic element capable of surprising.
