Born in 1998, Pietro Bucciarelli is a young Italian photographer whose work aims to propose different meanings regarding his subjects through various aesthetic responses. His explicit content is sometimes «the result of lies, fairy tales, and dreams,» as stated in his artist statement. In his project I exist because my parents had sex, Bucciarelli employs a precise method: by introducing objects and characters, he shifts the perspective to generate an emotional response from the viewer. Documenting his surroundings, the photographer creates stories that include symbolic elements connected with reality, enriching the image with additional layers of meaning.

I exist because my parents had sex tells a true story of memories and recollections in the eternal return to the present. «Sometimes I think of you and I no longer remember your voice. Maybe you left too soon. I wanted to ask you many more things and tell you who I am now. I’m not saying I necessarily wanted to see you, or for you to see me,» reads the text accompanying the project, serving as a stream of consciousness.

Finally, Bucciarelli’s thoughts touch on his relationship with the female figure. «To the women and girls I love and who have loved me. To the people I have loved too little, and who may one day stop loving me completely. To the women with large pearl earrings, elegantly dressed in outfits with bare legs and heavy, strong tears that linger a bit in their eyes and a bit not. While I stand here, a product of their carnal brazenness, I challenge the world to confront the provocative truth that life itself is forged through an act that society often shrouds in secrecy. I am the embodiment of that primordial energy,» he concludes. I exist because my parents had sex thus reveals itself as a reflection on the relationship we have with love and how this type of energy transforms within us, leaving room for life’s events.
