To tell the Timberland DYO customization service dedicated for this project to the iconic Yellow Boot, the british illustrator and comic artist Daniel Isles aka DirtyRobot created a short sequence that tells a micro story set in a possible future.
DirtyRobot condenses the current urban style into a futuristic cyber punk table, presenting us a work that seems to come out of a sci-fi animee. The artist, who loves to mix freehand work with digital work, this is how he told us his creative process:
I’ve always been drawn to inner city life and concrete jungle environments the world over. Feeding off this for inspiration allows me to express myself across any given time line; from the past, present and future within my illustration work. Traversing many urban landscape scenes and exploring different cities with diverse cultures through art and imagination.
A lot of my pieces are a combination of hand-drawn and digital, utilizing a three step process starting with pencil and ink techniques, to then finalising the colouring and renders in photoshop. During this process I also like to add textures to my work, which I feel adds more depth to the flat colours and gives the overall image a clean, yet gritty feeling.
For this piece, I took inspiration from great cities across the world in order to show the iconic Yellow Boot in a not so distant futuristic environment. I wanted to display the boot in a way that showed, no matter how technology had advanced, the aesthetic of this timeless boot would always remain true. The colours used are representative of a cool autumn evening, with a mixture of bright and dark colours that complement each other nicely.
Here are the artwork and some making-of images.
