We’ve been talking about it for a long time, and it has become one of the most eagerly awaited docus ever, but now we have a date. Martin Margiela: In His Own Words, the new documentary about Martin Margiela, the Banksy of fashion, will be released from April 10th, the distribution company Dogwoof has announced it and you can pre-order it here.
Directed by Reiner Holzemer, former director of Dries (a wonderful documentary about Dries Van Noten in 2017), the docu digs for the first time ever in Martin Margiela’s life, in his childhood, tackles the importance of anonymity, his love for fashion, his inspirations and finally the reason why he decided to leave his company in 2009.

The film offers a unique and intimate portrait of one of the most revolutionary and influential designers of her time, from working alongside Jean Paul Gaultier to the creative direction of Hermes, Margiela has never shown herself in public but has radically reinvented the world of the fashion system in over 20 years of career.
No, Martin Margiela’s face will remain hidden, but we will see his hands lovingly flip through the pages of old drawing albums, listen to the comments and thoughts from his own voice.
We will also see interviews with Jean Paul Gaultier, Carine Roitfeld, Lidewij Edelkoort, Cathy Hryn and Oliver Saillard, while the soundtrack was composed by the Belgian band dEUS.
“I promise you, when the movie is finished you will have the feeling that you’ve met the guy even though you haven’t“
Reiner Holzemer
