Jordan Brand celebrates 30 years of Space Jam

Some of the films that are part of our childhood never leave us, growing up with us and becoming a point of reference. Space Jam is definitely one of them. The mix Warner created by putting His Airness Michael Jordan on a basketball court with television’s wackiest characters never seems to go out of style, so much so that it seems impossible that 30 years (yes, really, 30) have already passed since it hit theaters.

As we told you when talking about the Ugly Sweater worn by MJ, the story of Space Jam actually begins before the film, in 1992, when Michael and Bugs Bunny met for the first time in the commercial “Hare Jordan”. An experiment that worked so well it turned, a few years later, into the film we all know.

For the film’s 30th anniversary, Jordan Brand reunited with its longtime creative partner Wieden+Kennedy and members of the Warner Bros. animation team to bring some of that magic to the present day with a collection whose focus, of course, had to be sneakers.

The undisputed star is naturally the Air Jordan 11, one of the best-looking sneakers ever, which comes in no fewer than five versions, each dedicated to a different piece of the film’s story.

The Retro OG is the one that will drive collectors wild, a near-replica of the model Michael wore in the film, with royal blue details, double-row stitching on the “23” on the heel and the “Jumpman Jam” tongue label. Polished leather, patent leather and a recreation of the box with Michael’s face that came with the 2000 release complete the tribute.

The “Magic Ball”, designed for women, draws on the moment when the Monstars steal the NBA players’ talent by trapping it inside a glowing ball. The synthetic leather upper shifts between four colors, a first for this model, and inside the box a small Magic Ball awaits that changes color depending on the angle.

The “Green Screen” is an all-green Air Jordan 11 that turns the technology used to shoot the film into a canvas where anything can happen. The orange detail on the outsole is a double tribute, to Bugs Bunny’s carrots and to the markers used on set to track movement, while the box shows Michael holding a clapperboard. Two on-field models round out the line, a baseball cleat in galactic blue and an American football cleat that will be promo only.

But there are also the Jordan First 1, the Air Jordan 3 Retro, the Air Jordan 1 Low SE “Magic Ball” and the Air Jordan 1 Low Golf Spike.

As for apparel, which is designed for men, women and kids, we’ll stop at two pieces. The first is the varsity jacket, with a relaxed fit, faux wool, retro patches and graphics reminiscent of player trading cards. Inside, it hides a lining inspired by the Monstars’ galaxies and a label recalling the famous “Secret Stuff” that, as we all know, was just water. The second is the Lola Bunny long-sleeve jersey, which borrows the glossy materials of late ’90s uniforms with a big “23” and her graphic on the back. The rest, from hoodies and fleece pants to T-shirts, shorts and basketball tanks, has Jordan cuts and references to the film pretty much everywhere.

Around the products there is also the “Greatness Is Never Out of Reach” campaign, inspired by the film’s most iconic scene, the one where Michael’s arm stretches across the whole court to reach the basket. Telling the story are Azzi Fudd, Aaron Judge, Rema and Teyana Taylor, while Beyond the Jam, a six-episode mini documentary series featuring Michael Jordan and many other protagonists, will also arrive on YouTube.

The collection will be available from November 5 on the Jordan Brand website and at select retailers. We’ve already marked the date, and with a “What’s up, Doc?” we’re getting ready to line up.
