Forget, for a moment, the Scandinavian aesthetic that has dominated platforms like Pinterest, as well as countless homes and design collections in recent years. London’s Six Dots Design studio, founded in 2020 by Joe Ellwood, took a decidedly different path from the outset.
Over the past four years, the studio has introduced two distinct collections, both unified by the material they are crafted from: aluminum.

The pieces in Contemporary Vanity, unveiled in 2022, and the 2024 collection Not in Service are all created from single sheets of aluminum, which are then laser-cut. The result is furniture with a sculptural quality—fluid, undefined lines that appear as though reflected in a pool of water.

Che si tratti di una lampada, una sedia o un tavolo, i pezzi di Six Dots Design sembrano caratterizzati da una stabilità precaria e, nonostante la scelta dell’alluminio, una certa leggerezza. Inoltre, i riflessi creati dal metallo, ricordano vagamente il mobilio di epoche passate – dove erano di moda rivestimenti in oro o ottone -, ma rivisitato in chiave futuristica. 

La scelta dell’alluminio ha aiutato lo studio a rendere le proprie creazioni più accessibili, ma anche a facilitare il processo di produzione, avendo meno sprechi sia in termini di materiali che di tempo.
