A woman, alone, seated at the end of a swing that remains poised even though there is no one sitting on the other side. An image that, even though it is created with just a few strokes, manages to give the viewer a profound sensation of loneliness and loss. This is the strength of Her Afternoon‘s work.
Her Afternoon is the stage name of a Chinese illustrator, more precisely from Hong Kong, who shares her beautiful watercolours on her Instagram profile.
These works have a distinct aesthetic and are characterised by a disarming simplicity. On monochrome backgrounds in muted hues, the artist places naked women and men so small that they seem overwhelmed by all the emptiness around them.
Sometimes this is enough, sometimes Her Afternoon adds elements, such as a staircase leading to an undefined place, a giant post-it note pad or a thread on which to balance in order not to fall into darkness.

With skill, the artist shows that sometimes little is needed, almost nothing, to surprise the eye and get straight to the heart.
