An intimate, in-depth look at an incredible selection of pioneering women who have rewritten the rules of the creative industry.
This is the focus of the new book by Mexican-American artist Hugo Huerta Marin, Portrait of an Artist: Conversations with Trailblazing Creative Women published by Prestel, 450 pages in which the artistic director of Marina Abramović’s studio, has photographed and interviewed some of the women who through their creative work – each in their own field – have “changed culture by shaking the structures of our established belief systems”.
Miuccia Prada, Rei Kawakubo, Ann Demeulemeester, Uma Thurman, Marina Abramović, Yoko Ono, Tracey Emin, Jenny Holzer, Debbie Harry and FKA Twigs are just a few of the pioneering creatives Huerta Marin spoke with by going directly to their homes or spaces dedicated to their work.
From visual arts, to fashion and ending with music, Portrait of an Artist: Conversations with Trailblazing Creative Women is a collection of original interviews and Polaroids – created by Huerta Matin himself – of nearly 30 women and spanning every aspect of creativity: race, gender and politics are some of the topics that emerge while reading the book.
The book gives us both a portrait of every single woman and a powerful fresco on the impact that these same women have had, and still have, on the entire creative industry and beyond.
The dialogue with the artist unfolds by probing the joys and challenges, vulnerabilities and triumphs, of the women involved. Cate Blanchett reflects on the differences between acting on stage and in film; Marina Abramovic discusses her most radical work in performance art; Annie Lennox recalls 1970s London; Carrie Mae Weems discusses the relationship between race and photography – these and other conversations are further brought to life by Huerta Marin’s intimate Polaroids.
A collection of interviews and photographs, realized in more than 7 years of work, which allows the reader to have an absolutely rare and exclusive look at the lives of the most fascinating and interesting women in the world of creativity.
Portrait of an Artist: Conversations with Trailblazing Creative Women by Hugo Huerta Marin will be released on October 7 but you can already pre-order it here.
