Ihor Ustynskyy’s portraits exalt femininity

Claudia Fuggetti · 1 month ago · Photography

Ihor Ustynskyy is a photographer who lives and works in the Ukrainian city of Lviv and who has focused his artistic research on the genre of portraiture. In his Instagram feed, poetic images of beautiful women follow one another, with very different personalities, but always revealing themselves to be feminine and sensual.

We move from soft poses and atmospheres, to dreamlike and travel images, to arrive at intriguing and brazen photographs of artistic nudity. Ultimately, it is as if it represented the classic transition from adolescence to maturity, from innocent girls to women who have no problem exhibiting the attributes of their femininity.

This passage is not brutal, but takes place in an almost “soft” way, in which allusion, provocation, and innocence become one: the image.

Destabilizing images by Leonard Suryajaya

Destabilizing images by Leonard Suryajaya

Claudia Fuggetti · 1 month ago · Photography

The universe created by photographer Leonard Suryajaya is psychedelic, colorful and destabilizing. The artist uses photography to transcend the boundaries of intimacy, community and family. His works show how everyday life is full of hidden meanings, taking the form of bizarre tableaux whose protagonists are his family.

Enlisting his loved ones into his photographic project, he encourages ever more wild combinations and poses as means for them to perform their loyalty.  The results are photographs that are tender and critical, bound up as they are with the struggles of familial authority and self identity.

It should be noted that Leonard Suryajaya is an Indonesian citizen of Chinese origin of Buddhist religion, but educated in Christian schools in a Muslim country. How can all these contradictions be reconciled? Through art.

His photographs work together to establish narratives.

In the gallery that follows there are several striking images taken from the artist’s various interesting projects.

Ausentes, Rodrigo Chapa’s sensual minimalism

Ausentes, Rodrigo Chapa’s sensual minimalism

Claudia Fuggetti · 1 month ago · Photography

Rodrigo Chapa is a Mexican artist who has worked with photography for 12 years. His strongly minimalist taste has its roots in his background in design and is revealed in his photographic work Ausentes, a game of shapes and sensuality.

The series refers to abstract expressionism and offers images characterized by abstract backgrounds and visual praise of the sensual body of a dancer, who never reveals her face, but gets lost in the strongly geometric composition. Capturing the movement and improvisation of the dancers, the artist places the emphasis on the physical manifestation of the subject, which becomes a work of art.

In this way, the body itself dematerializes assumes its own identity in the paradox of cancellation.

In Flight, Tom van Schelven’s poetic angels

In Flight, Tom van Schelven’s poetic angels

Claudia Fuggetti · 1 month ago · Photography

Tom van Schelven is an artist who divides his time between Manchester and the Netherlands, in fact in the body of his work you can feel a mood of immediacy, typically Dutch. His commercial collaborations always find the easiest way to get the message that the artist wants to communicate through; whether it’s immortalizing surfers for The Wall Street Journal, leading actors like Samuel L Jackson, or creating commercial campaigns for Nike, Sony or Renault, Tom’s images always know how to stand out and emerge from the crowd.

In the In Flight series, the connection between subject and lens becomes almost spiritual: the project shows a group of acrobats in the desert, who move harmoniously on the sand dunes and roll in the air, standing out against the backdrop of a bright blue sky.

When I’m shooting movement, there’s a lot of interesting bits I can photograph without directing. I wasn’t trying to shoot them at the apex of the backflip, it was more the moment slightly before and slightly afterward, when not everything is perfect in terms of expression or movement.

Many of the frames that you can see in the galley were not shot at the time you might expect. The result is a juicy work that represents acrobats as angels suspended in the sky.
