Until a few years ago, Siargao was a well-kept secret. An island nestled among the crystal-clear waters of the Philippines, wrapped in palm forests and a laid-back atmosphere, far from mass tourism. Photographer Luca Fontana has captured this corner of paradise, which has become a global hotspot for surfers drawn to its perfect waves and a lifestyle dictated by nature.

Located about 800 kilometers southeast of Manila, Siargao is the beating heart of Filipino surfing. Its waves, including the legendary Cloud 9, are considered among the best in the world, attracting professionals and enthusiasts in search of the perfect mix of adrenaline and tropical beauty. But beyond the waves, the island tells stories of community, tradition, and resilience.

The local population still lives in harmony with the environment, in bamboo huts and stilt houses along the river, with fishing, hunting, and farming remaining their main sources of livelihood. This deep connection to the land made Siargao even stronger when, in December 2021, the island was struck by Super Typhoon Rai (Typhoon Odette), leaving behind destruction and immense challenges.

But Siargao did not stop. It responded with extraordinary strength, rebuilding its homes, infrastructure, and spirit piece by piece. Today, the island shines once again—not just as a dream destination, but as a symbol of resilience and rebirth.

Those who visit Siargao don’t just come in search of the perfect wave—they discover a welcoming community, an authentic energy, and a landscape that continues to captivate, despite everything. This essence is perfectly captured in Fontana’s shots, which reveal the island’s true magic: its ability to regenerate without ever losing its soul.
