Scrolling through the Instagram profile of artist Lucian Prună, it’s impossible to resist the temptation to open each post and discover the details of his works. From lipstick to a cathode-ray tube computer, passing through an array of food compositions, it seems he has already painted everything we recognize as familiar. A quick Google search reveals little information, with the only significant result being a Vice Romania article from September 2023. In it, an interview explores the painter’s beginnings and his relationship with this strikingly contemporary realism. Despite the article’s date, there are still many intriguing aspects to Prună’s story. He studied in Florence, and before turning to painting, he initially pursued church restoration. Speaking about his audience, he says: «My audience is 95% Romanian, but I also reach international viewers—two years ago, I was invited to exhibit in Tehran, but I didn’t go». Despite being relatively unknown abroad, Lucian Prună’s paintings have the right appeal to continue captivating his audience with his compositions—what he refers to as still life (a term he prefers over natura morta, as he made clear in his interview with Vice).
