Map of the Internet, the new project by Martin Vargic

Since its inception in 1989, Internet has been in a state of flux. In the chaos and over the decades, many major players have emerged and many others have fallen into oblivion. In the coming years, the popularity of the sites we use today is likely to change gradually in a similar way, following the course of evolution and the cost of progress.
To stop time for a moment and provide an unprecedented visualisation of today’s Internet for future generations, Polish designer Martin Vargic has created an extraordinary project. Map of the Internet is the result of his work. It is a dense and detailed map that accurately represents the current state of the World Wide Web today.

Inspired by US designer Randall Munroe‘s Map of Online Communities (2007), Martin Vargic has visualised another aspect of today’s technological world in a similar, concise and comprehensive way.
Map of the Internet documents the largest and most popular websites together with their countless aspects and features, while showing the extremely rapid evolution of the Internet. Several thousand sites are depicted as distinct countries, regions and neighbouring continents, with the dominant colours of their interfaces.

In addition to news sites, search engines, social networks, e-commerce, adult entertainment, file sharing and software companies, this map also includes a wealth of additional information: a ranking of the most popular websites, the largest web-related companies, a list of the top blocked sites in China, the best-selling video games of all time, the cost and speed of broadband, internet censorship levels and the most popular social network by country.
