The world of Magnhild Kennedy, a.k.a. Damselfrau on the surface looks like that of magical and mysterious creatures, straight out of the imagination of a science fiction writer, capable of seeing worlds in which looks are hypnotic works of art.
The Norwegian artist uses objects found by chance among everyday ones, reusing them, sewing them together and assembling them to produce highly detailed artifacts that touch the line between artwork and clothing.
Damselfrau’s idea precisely to make objects that can be simultaneously admired and used, that are art and action. Fake lace or objects found on the street, everything is assembled with absolute rigor to create masks and characters that belong to another world, of fantasy or theater.
Damselfrau describes his works this way, “I work with masks both as autonomous works of art and as objects of action. For me, the mask is a place where different elements come together as a situation. The work is about this place-situation, rather than about the mask as a theme or category of form. The mask is a place.“
