In 2011, Mob Wives premiered for the first time, an American TV series aired on VH1 that followed the stories of approximately twelve women from Staten Island, whose families and husbands had been arrested for crimes related to the Italian-American mafia. But who is the Mob Wife really, and why is there so much talk about her? What does she wear and how does she present herself to others? Our intention is to create a true profile starting from TikTok, the platform that has allowed this phenomenon to emerge, in stark contrast to the simple and clean Clean Girl aesthetic that has been discussed so much in the last two years. The Mob Wife, on the other hand, is an example that has not been widely welcomed in many cases. The reason lies in the toxicity that this model of woman brings with it, starting from the mafia associations.
From cinema to TikTok
In any case, the myth of the Mob Wife begins long before 2011. «Carmela Soprano walked so you could run,» says Kayla Trivieri on TikTok, formalizing this new era. Francis Ford Coppola, on his Instagram profile, also seems to have taken note of the return of the Mob Wife with a very curious post. In The Godfather – the director’s masterpiece – we find Connie Corleone, played by Talia Shire. Still, in The Sopranos, there’s Carmela Soprano and Karen Hill in Goodfellas. Michelle Pfeiffer is Angela De Marco in the eloquent film Married to the Mob (1988). More recently, characters like Rosalyn Rosenfeld, played by Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle, or the unforgettable Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci have arrived. Although the Italian fashion house is far from mafia associations, the character of Reggiani – Lady Gaga’s unforgettable performance – perfectly embodies the style of the Mob Wives we talked about above. And now we will discover why.

What does the Mob Wife wear?
In the Mob Wife’s wardrobe, animal prints and all kinds of furs are a must. In her jewelry box, only tennis bracelets and jewelry with decidedly bulky stones along with equally flashy watches. On TikTok, @thesweetpaisana – self-proclaimed OG Mob Wife – breaks down the characteristics that differentiate the Mob Wife from all other women. She does it with a French manicure and a Juice Couture hoodie that captures attention. According to The Business of Fashion, this trend also seems to be the reason behind the unexpected return of furs – preferably fake ones. But after all, how can we forget Carrie Bradshaw‘s Mob Wife era in Sex and the City?

Emilia Petrarca on Harper’s Bazaar does not dare to define the Mob Wives’ style as a real runway trend, but it seems impossible not to notice an approach to this aesthetic in looks we have seen in some Fall 2023 collections. From Versace to Dolce & Gabbana, through the bulky jewelry of Schiaparelli and the black leather and bodycon silhouettes of Alaïa. After all, as @trovlov says on TikTok, if it looks like you’re going to a funeral, it means you’re on the right track for the perfect Mob Wife outfit. In short, the Mob Wife of our dreams not only wears all-black outfits but also a vintage fur – real or fake at this point doesn’t matter – found in any flea market and spritzes herself with Paco Rabanne’s Lady Million every morning.

Mob Wives: Bold Yet Multifaceted Women
Being a Mob Wife – despite having well-defined codes from an aesthetic perspective – also brings with it an extraordinary energy. An aura of confidence and firmness that could be useful to many of us. Still on Harper’s Bazaar, Petrarca highlights how TikTok is designed to bring catchy and explanatory aesthetics to our feeds enough to captivate us, but also to distance us from the dynamics at play in everyday life. An interesting perspective that makes us reflect on why such a toxic example of femininity has managed to go viral. The Mob Wife is undoubtedly a bold but, above all, multifaceted type of woman. The less elegant characteristics that distinguish her, however, also demonstrate that one can go beyond appearances. The complexity behind the concept of the Mob Wife lies in the conflict between what is right and what is wrong. However, all of this while remaining true to oneself. If there’s something we can learn from the proliferation of this trend – setting aside any mafia or criminal associations – it’s the importance of being ourselves, in all our facets, even in the darkest ones.
