Nike Air Max 95 “Dave White”

Released in September 2016, the Nike Air Max 95 “Dave White” were conceived in collaboration with the UK artist Dave White and Size?, a renowned sneaker retailer.

The shoes take inspiration from White’s “Albion” Collection, which sees Britain native species re-imagined in White’s signature style.

Dave White is a contemporary British Artist who dedicates his work to celebrating popular culture and interpreting emotive issues.
White graduated at Liverpool John Moores University and has enjoyed success from the inception of his career, with selection for the Northern Graduates exhibition at the Royal College of Art in 1994, whilst also debuting  at Sotheby’s London and various international art fairs.

Moreover, he pioneered the ‘Sneaker Art’ movement in 2002, with the execution of pop art inspired sneaker oil portraits, leading to long term collaborations with Nike and Jordan Brand.

He is one of a handful of artists to have his own signature Jordan releases, but the main topic of this article is his 2016 signature sneaker project with Size? and Nike for the AM95.
By revisiting the aforementioned Air Max, Dave White represented his interpretation of some of Britain’s native animal species.

Focusing on his rabbit artwork, appreciable in the seamless paneled scheme of the upper, with this shoe Dave White wanted to take back the essence of his work in the cleanest way possible.
A rough hairy suede sits on the tongue and back-tab of the shoe, alongside soft canvas mudguards, whereas contrasting hits of yellow and blue, consisting of the heel branding and Swoosh, add additional depth to the story.
The upper’s seamless construction comes with synthetic graphic print panels inspired by the colors of a rabbit, as well as total white canvas and suede on the tongue and heel.
At the end, the design is capped off by a Air-embedded midsole, and black and pink rubber outsole.

The artist’s exploration of British wildlife informs the design of both colorways, with this one placing the focus particularly on the fox.
The shoe’s orange canvas upper, featuring White’s signature brushstrokes printed on the seamless overlays applied by hot pressing along the sidewalls, is complemented by tonal suede detailing on the back and tongue.
Eventually, the mashup is complemented by a white midsole, embedded with a blue Air Max unit offering an additional note of color, and a black rubber outsole.

Other than through SNKRS app, the release took place in three different selected stores, which were respectively: Size? in the UK, Beams in Tokyo, and Kith in New York. This last shop has additionally held a bespoke t-shirt project during the release party.
