“Outside The Lines” is the series by South African photographer Anne Nobels, who uses the female body and its expressiveness to counteract paralyzing panic attacks. The artist has focused her photographic research on the subject of human vulnerability and she tries to visually describe symptoms of her continuous fight against the disease. As herself explains, everyday life becomes a challenge:

“When it gets too much for me to handle, I’ll get a panic attack. This generally happens once or twice a day. This project started that way, when I feel good I still feel like my senses are heightened, it makes the places I see almost every day seem un-earthlike”.

Anne wants to show how reality is filtered by our emotions and sensations, which influence not only human relationships, but also the whole vision of life. Outside The Lines is a borderline project, halfway between reality and fiction, where the inner world comes to life and finds a sense of peace when it’s brought out.

“When I feel good I still feel like my senses are heightened, it makes the places I see almost every day seem un-earthlike. I’d like to show people that although an illness or condition makes you feel (very) limited, it can have positive side effects. It’s so easy to get stuck in the bad, but in my opinion, it’s worth a try. It could change the way you feel about your life considerably”.

Art becomes a way to heal and to derive something good also from the tormented condition of the disease.
