The Phaidon publishing house has released the largest book on African art dedicated to contemporary black artists. African Artists: From 1882 to Now is a 352-page collection that examines the work of over 300 artists. Painters sculptors, photographers, motion designers put together to give a comprehensive look at the African art scene over the last few decades.
Along with a small description of the works and artists, the book leaves complete space for the bright colors, symbols and topics of the works. It is precisely the themes, along with the different techniques used, that trace the colonial past of many African nations, but also the refinement of the craftsmanship and the beauty of the landscapes depicted.
Inside the book there are some well-known ones such as El Anatsui, David Goldblatt, Lubaina Himid, Julie Mehretu and Wangechi Mutu, along with other emerging names that are carrying on an important artistic and cultural dialogue.
