His name is Jacopo Ceccarelli, better known as 2501 and he is an Italian artist, born in Milan and moved to Sao Paulo in Brazil at the age of twenty. Today he spends his life anywhere in the world where he can develop his art in all possible forms. His artistic research ranges from painting to sculpture, from photography to the creation of installations. This multidisciplinary nature of his work leads him to develop a continuous curiosity towards every phase of the creation of a work, especially towards the creative process.
“I personally am fascinated by the idea of the process, it is the basis of my work: what I paint is the representation of pictorial time, of the time I spent to paint.”
This attention to the documentation of the creation of a work is reflected in Nomadic Experiment, a sort of digital archive, a site on which to find short documentaries that show the realization of work from beginning to end.
But, in addition to his works, 2501 carries out interesting collateral projects, among which PIATTAFORMA stands out.
At Collater.al we met 2501 that tell us something more about the project:
“PIATTAFORMA is a project that was born above all from an idea of interconnection with three artists who, in addition to being friends, share a modus operandi: Franco Jaz Fasoli, who is Argentinian, Alexis Diaz who is Puerto Rican but lives in Miami, and Lucio Basik who is Italian.
It also starts from my propensity to have projects outside 2501 that, however, talk about art and relate to the production methods behind the creation of pieces in series or unique pieces.
In this case, this project is called PIATTAFORMA because it tries to create a synergy between various skills of different artists, aimed at the production of a limited series.
PIATTAFORMA is an attempt to activate collaborations that lead to unexpected results both with the limited series, but also with the interchanges that are created and that in turn give rise to different projects.
But PIATTAFORMA is not a limited series brand, it’s just a research project.
So far, there have been three series:
“We started by making the originals thanks to the skill of Franco who studied as a ceramist and sculptor and then we produced the limited series, indeed very limited.
Alexis’ series is divided into two different series, the white one with 6 pieces and the gold one with 3 pieces.
Lucio Basik’s series of 6 pieces was a real challenge because it combines ceramic, which is very fragile, with bronze, a very hard material. So we had to find technical solutions to make these two materials work together.
It took us more or less a year and a half to make these two series come out because we worked without being in a hurry and trying to solve – also for our personal pleasure – the technical problems that were the basis of these projects.”
Then, 2501 explained to us how the project works from an economic point of view:
“The idea behind PIATTAFORMA is that half of the revenue goes to the artist and the other half goes to finance the platform and thus future projects of future artists.
It’s like an on-going curatorial project with the ultimate aim of creating a series of pieces that dialogue with each other through the idea of production. All the pieces are linked together by the idea of the process, by the idea of self-sustaining production.“
Another peculiarity of the project, and why probably if you follow the artists assiduously you have not heard about it, is that there is no site dedicated to PLATFORM:
“As for the advertising of the project, is a very small series, we simply used Instagram, my profile and that of the other artists involved.
Of course, with the project of making an exhibition, there is also the idea of linking a type of communication that tells the process.”
For the next two releases, we have to wait for Christmas 2019, waiting for the new works discover the already released below!
