ReActor, when living in a house becomes a performance

The projects by Schweder + Shelley are halfway between architecture and art installation so that they create the series of experimental projects Social Relationship Architecture. Among the works, there is ReActor, a house designed for two people and built in the balance on a column 4.5 meters high. The house was built on a hill in the field of Art Omi Architecture Field in the state of New York.

The house rotates 360 degrees on its own and tilts like a swing according to the movements of the tenants, who must each remain on one side of the house to keep it stationary. So, a place created for two people who can not really be together.

Living in this house becomes a real artistic performance, in which one’s movements are linked and conditioned by the movements of the other.

This example of performative architecture asks questions about the nature of social space and how architecture can influence human behavior.
