Sarah Boutin is a Canadian visual artist who, in her work Merci pour ton agréable visite, les jolies fleurs et les délicieuses fraises (which translates to Thank you for the pleasant visit, the lovely flowers, and the delicious strawberries you let me taste), explores themes of community and sisterhood. The project stems from a specific encounter: Boutin had the opportunity to meet a friend of her grandmother, a 90-year-old nun from the Sisters of Charity of Quebec. This three-day meeting took place in the retirement home within the convent where the elderly nun resided, immersing the artist in an entirely new environment. Contemplation, silence, and moments of prayer surrounded Boutin, offering her a chance to connect with a time of serenity.

In this atmosphere of vocation, the support, care, and assistance provided by the community inspired Boutin to develop a poetic-documentary approach. This approach would continue to evolve through subsequent and regular visits to the convent, spanning more than two years. The images showcased at the Yeast Photo Festival reflect an archive of what could be called sisterhood.

Sarah Boutin’s project is curated by Edda Fahrenhorst and Veronica Nicolardi, in collaboration with ArtWork.
