Until next September 16th, the small town of Bruges, Belgium, will be the backdrop of the second edition of the Contemporary Art and Architecture Triennial.
This year’s theme is Liquid City. 15 architectural structures created by 15 creative artists will animate the city, addressing the theme of the “liquid society” theorized by Polish sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman.
The artworks invite us to rethink the city, the canals, the streets and the meeting places. These include the floating pavilion by Spanish architects Jose Selgas & Lucia Cano aka Selgascano, an organic structure with semi-transparent, red and orange walls that change with the light. A translucent red bubble floating along one of Bruges’ picturesque canals.
Known for their use of synthetic materials and new technologies, Selgascano has created a similar pavilion at the Serpentine Pavilion in 2015. A steel skeleton, a tunnel and an adjacent yellow decking encourage locals to take a dip in the canal, turning the pavilion into a swimming pool.
